Selin Sakarcan – Effective Tips for Keeping Your Feet and Ankle Healthy

3 min read

Many people take their feet and ankles for granted; little do they know how important they are for good health. They support your weight and balance. They need as much care as the rest of your body if you wish to remain in optimal health.

Selin Sakarcan is a widely respected podiatric surgeon in Pennsylvania. She specializes in foot and ankle surgery. Currently, she is a business owner as well, focusing on setting up a non-profit in Connecticut called Back on my Feet.

Besides being a surgeon, she is an athlete and actively indulges in many sports. She loves running in marathons and hails from a Turkish-American home. She is passionate about the Turkish language and culture. She is fond of learning languages that developed while she was studying French.

According to her, you should always pay attention to foot health to ensure no walking problems arise. The moment your shoes wear out, they must be replaced, or else you will face pain when you walk.

Watch and control your body weight

This is important as if you are overweight; there is a lot of pressure and stress on your feet. The arch of the feet that is important for combating the force of the body suffers when you exert extra pressure on it. As a result, the steps you take are painful when you walk.

In order to reduce weight, you need to embark on an exercise routine. This does not mean you need to join the gym. You can start with simple exercises like walking, running, jogging, etc. If you are fond of playing sports, engage in them. In case you are too overweight and obese, it is prudent for you to hire a qualified, skilled, and experienced personal trainer to help and motivate you to exercise daily.

Again, here you can join the gym for personal training or ask your personal training to come home to guide you. Depending upon your budget, lifestyle, goals, and preferences, you can make a choice.

Foot and ankle exercises to be done daily

There are some simple foot and ankle exercises you should do daily. Simple stretches help you to keep the blood flowing. These stretches should be done before you begin your exercise and after you complete them. In this way, you can stop injuries that at times occur after exercising. You can keep the blood circulating to your feet and ankles by wriggling the toes, avoiding sitting in the cross-legged position for long, and moving the ankles.

According to Selin Sakarcan, you should also keep your feet dry and clean. If you do not dry your feet after they get wet, you will get fungal infections, especially between the toes. Wear socks that allow your feet to breathe.

Last but not least, in case you face any pain while walking, you must consult a good podiatrist for a check-up. It is important for the specialist to diagnose the cause of the pain before it grows and becomes unbearable for you.
